Corporate Greed. American Companies & Corporations Refuse to Hire the Unemployed; Will Only Hire the Currently Employed.
81Companies are excluding the jobless from hiring.
MAY 2012 UPDATE
Well, folks. It's been over a year since the EEOC testimony. Naturally, nothing has been done to address the problem...
This page still wants to out companies that engage in this practice. So if you know of one, by all means tell us about it in the Comments Section below.
You Are (Not) Hired.
Ref list: corporate greed, jobs, job ads, hiring practices.
Corporate America continues its refusal to hire the unemployed. Their job ads now contain phrases such as “no unemployed candidates will be considered” or “must be currently employed”. This is truly corporate greed at its worst.
This problem has become increasingly severe as evidenced by EEOC Testimony (new window).
This page is an ongoing compilation of companies that are engaging in this particular corporate-greed practice. If the reader is aware of such a company, please post their name and/or ad in the Comments Section below; any additional information would also be appreciated. When this list has accumulated 100 company names, the information will be forwarded to the EEOC.
EEOC testimony excerpts: … eliminating arbitrary employment barriers that operate to weed out qualified and interested job applicants … it is profoundly disturbing that the trend of deliberately excluding the jobless from work opportunities is on the rise …. Unemployed Need Not Apply: Stories suggesting systematic exclusion, often blatant, of unemployed workers from consideration for jobs began to emerge early last summer … Sony Ericsson,… had posted a job announcement …that explicitly said “No Unemployed Candidates Will Be Considered At All. … ad posted on The People Place … specified the company would “not consider/review anyone NOT currently employed regardless of the reason; … A Craigslist posting for assistant restaurant managers … flatly requiring that applicants “Must be currently employed; … unemployed workers—mostly older workers— … told they will not be referred or considered for employment, once recruiters or potential employers learn they are not currently working. … Most executive recruiters won’t look at a candidate unless they have a job, even if they don’t like to admit it. … the tendency to exclude the unemployed is growing. … Other staffing firm industry specialists similarly confirm that the unemployed need not apply…. “there is a disturbing and growing trend among employers—honored by staffing firms—to refuse to consider the unemployed for available job openings, regardless of their qualifications. This refusal is often explicitly manifested in job ads that include restrictive language specifying that only currently employed candidates will be considered; or that no unemployed candidates will be considered, regardless of the reason for unemployment.”

I believe that ACER's repair division and Sprint's retail arm employs discriminatory practices as well. The former made me eat costs to afford an interview, with hands-on tests for the job tasks, which were passed (94% written, two repairs done under 10 minutes), only to use the way the resume was worded to weed me out. (Blatantly said I wasn't qualified when my whole resume is focused on IT sector skills)
Dollar General apparently encourages/trains their managers to hire minorities (Reverse discrimination) and excludes candidates who come from non-retail backgrounds, even for unskilled positions, which require training regardless of former employment.
Yes, I'd heard about this when it first started happening. I personally haven't seen any of these ads though.
The company I work for is hiring. They do not discriminate between the employed and unemployed. Just looking for dependable people that can pass a drug test. Very few can.
We have a very diverse workforce. There are many Asians, Africans, and all genders, as well as many gay indivduals.
It is a corporate giant that is in the business of making money. Why else be in business?
paradigm,
I knew Americans were having a difficult time maintaining their existance, but not to this extent. Thanks for the alert!

I couldn't figure out why I wasn't receiving calls for job applications..I'm highly qualified in customer service with over 30 years experience...one recruiter did ask me if I were currently employed...NOW I GET IT! So, not only is my age an issue (56), but the fact that I'm jobless through no fault of my own is another...cruel, heartless example of corporate greed and stupidity at its' finest...the very catalyst of our recession now has the arrogance to exclude its' victims...

Lord, I've never wanted to use profanity in a comment so desperately! THIS IS AWFUL! In all honesty, I had no idea that this was even happening because I've been lucky enough to remain employed throughout the recession. I'm going to start looking for a job, though, just to get my hands on ads like these. This is deplorable. GREAT hub. Thanks for sharing it.
